New Year's Day 2023

It’s that time of year again, coming around increasingly quicker the older I get, where I once again wish all my readers a very Happy New Year and thank you all for taking the time to dip in occasionally and read the odd review or three (the odder the better, right?). I don’t hold out much hope for this coming year, as it happens... I think it’s going to be a horrendous one for me personally due to a lot of ‘challenges’ coming up but, I’ll be optimistic and say I’ll try my best to keep the blog going and updated three times a week if I possibly can.

I’ve certainly, with over 200 reviews already written and waiting in the wings to be tweaked and published, got more than enough content and am planning on creating a lot more. Here’s some of what I’d hope to have going up this year, if things go the way I want them to.

Well, I need to finish up the reviews of the Perry Mason films and the movies which comprise the Bill Rebane box set. I also need to put up reviews of all of Basil Rathbone’s Sherlock Holmes movies once those are done. And, since it’s the 60th anniversary of everyone’s favourite timelord this November (with nothing new being broadcast before then, it would seem), I’ll need to revisit and review a fair number of the new Blu Ray sets for the blog. I also need to finish watching the two Severin boxed editions devoted to The Eurocrypt Of Christopher Lee... not to mention their All The Haunts Be Ours box of folk horror films. And I have a load of Hammer Dracula reviews to publish, plus a raft of Ray Harryhausen reviews ready to go up. And I’d really like to get back to revisiting the Zatoichi movies on Blu Ray, not to mention a third DVD volume of Sleepy Eyes Of Death. More spaghetti Westerns too, I think will be in the mix, along the usual horror and exploitation fair. Plus...there will be Kolchack!

There may be a few more themed weeks such as a Sabata week and, probably a Face Graft Surgery in Cinema week (but, no, I certainly won’t be revisiting Face Off anytime soon... or ever... thanks very much). I have a load of other box sets to delve into too... including but not exclusive too (and these may take a year or two to get up on the blog) the Sartana movies, The Incredibly Strange Films Of Ray Dennis Steckler, the House Of Psychotic Women Rarities Collection, Bruce Lee, Mae West and even a set of the Lupe Velez Mexican Spitfire movies (that last courtesy of Warner Archives). There may even be a couple of bona fide 1970s porn films thrown into the mix, with the help of the wonderful Vinegar Syndrome label. Oh... and absolutely loads of Blu Ray giallo upgrades to get my teeth into, including a few by Argento.

So yeah, I may be anticipating a bad year for myself but, fingers crossed I’m able to keep my head above water (should I still want to), then the blog should certainly be firing on all cylinders for the forseeable future... fingers crossed.

Happy New Year 2022!

Well that’s another year over and another year of Covid behind us (that should leave us with only another four or five years of Covid misery to go before the required global collaboration to defeat it kicks in, is my guess). I’d like to take this opportunity to wish all my readers a Happy New Year and say thank you to first time and regular readers alike.

By way of a quick preview of the next one or two years, depending on how quickly I can get posts up, I will say that, midst many reviews of things which are unknown to me (but will hopefully prove interesting), there are some certainties for sure, in the works. As long as I stay in good health and financially solvent, that is.

For instance, the last of my Showa era Godzilla reviews should be up sometime within the next week and also the last few reviews of both the Classic Universal Monster movies (although certainly not all their monster movies for sure... more will eventually follow) and the rest of the Gamera series should be following soon after. Plus, there will definitely be reviews covering various boxed editions... so look out for running series of reviews on William Grefé, Bill Rebane and Yokai Monsters. Those ones are at least certain to come up this year. I’ve also got reviews of the complete run of The Falcon movies and the short run of cinematically released Perry Mason movies completed and waiting in the wings. As are a bunch of Jean Rollin movie reviews. Plus, oh yes, lots of classic Doctor Who stories.

I’m also hoping to finish revisiting the Hammer Dracula films on Blu Ray and, in time, their Frankenstein series... along with a whole raft of other movies from the famous British studio. I also intend to finally dig into those two Sam Fuller boxes from a few years ago... not to mention some more Harryhausen, Corman’s Poe pictures and a revisit to Universal’s Inner Sanctum series of movies. Throw in a whole raft of giallo and horror titles plus some Kolchack and, yeah, I’m hoping it will be a good year for the blog. Plus, loads of surprises which I don’t even know about yet. Most importantly, perhaps, I need to work my way through Severin’s The Eurocrypt Of Christopher Lee set and, fingers crossed, their All The Haunts Be Ours box of folk horror should also be pitching up on these shores over the next week or two.

Now I come to think of it, I need to get back to Zatoichi and The Sleepy Eyes Of Death movie cycles sometime soon. So, yeah, a full slate of things to come which, yeah, they could take a while to get through. But there wil be lots of non-series films and TV shows in various genres and from various times to throw into the mix too.

Merry Christmas 2016

 
Season's Greetings

Hi there.

Well it’s that time of year when I get to thank you all for reading and to wish you a Merry Christmas.

It’s actually been a pretty good year for me on many fronts... my personal life is something I’m much happier with and, for the first time in a few decades, work has been pretty good for the last few months too. So I have a lot to be thankful for this year.

This is the bit where I tell you what the future has in store for NUTS4R2 and, it has to be said, I always get it completely wrong.

Well I can, at least, safely predict the very near future on this blog. In a day or two my review of the new Doctor Who Christmas Special should be published here... unless something absolutely awful happens to me when I should be watching it. This has been a full year without the regular programme on air but there will be a new series starting next year (sometime in April is my best guess) and we have had the spin off sister show, Class, to keep us going (yeah, there will be a review of the first, hopefully not the last, series of that going up soon).

I also have to get the inevitable Best Movies of 2016 list up there soonest. Just got one more to watch and one other to rewatch before that list is fully finalised but I hope to have it up by New Years Eve. As usual, my Best Soundtracks end of year list will not happen until the second week or so of January... I have to wait until after my birthday before I can draw a conclusive picture of those as stand alone listens.

As for the rest of the year on this blog... well, I shall try and predict it but I usually get it wrong...

Hoping to get a lot of franchises one here... so some more Zatoichi movies, some more Sleepy Eyes of Death movies, finishing off The Saint movies, finishing off the Charlie Chan movies, a possible rewatch for the Lone Wolf and Cub and Lady Snowblood movies... and likewise for the Indiana Jones, A L I E N, Batman, The Falcon, Stray Cat Rock, Superman and Beverly Hills Cop films. Plus... more gialli, more horror, more exploitation, some blaxploitation and some very strange superhero movies. Plus... I should probably get around to watching films like James Batman (where James Bond and Batman team up... no, I’m not making this up), Brazilian Star Wars and Wolf Devil Woman. Many more titles like these folks... I just have to get the time to catch up on this stuff.

And, of course, the inevitable slew of new cinema releases. People have been saying that 2016 has been an incredibly bad year for film. I’m not so sure... I feel like a lot of the DVDs and Blu Rays I wanted to explore had to be overlooked this year because there were so many interesting releases at the cinema. Will 2017 be the same? We shall all have to wait and see, I guess.

One thing’s for sure though... I’m very grateful for each and every one of you who comes on here to read my words once in a while, even if it’s only very occasionally. So thanks so much for your time and support and have a very Merry Christmas from me. And, you know... a very Happy New Year.

Christmas 2014

Well... it’s that time of year again when I say “Thank You Very Much” to my readers on this blog. It’s a bit of a sad one for me this year, due to personal reasons, but the one thing I always like to focus on is my writing when I’m feeling extra low. Christmas can be a lonely time for many people out there but please, if you’re feeling lonely, reach out to someone for some Christmas cheer if you are able.

Also, keep an eye on the comments section because I’m going to be giving extra clues to the answers in there from time to time.

Now I didn’t get nearly as much of the things I wanted to get reviewed in the last two years done but, fingers crossed, here’s a little of what I’m hoping to get to in the next 12 months or so...

Well, I’d ike to finish off my reviews of The Saint movie series and the Zatoichi films. I have loads of bizarre superhero, super-criminal and exploitation films you might possibly never have heard of before on the slate too. I keep meaning to review more by my favourite director Akira Kurosawa and maybe throw some more Golden Age movies and serials on here too. Not to mention addressing more Westerns and Musicals. Plenty of horror, too, I’m sure... plus a load of new cinema releases will need to be attended and dutifully “written up”. There are some small, low budget movies coming up called things like The Avengers: Age Of Ultron and Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens, for example. So I should probably take a look at those.

As for the very near future... well look for a new review either Boxing Day or, possibly, the day after, for this year’s Doctor Who Christmas Special and, if I get the chance to get into central London again in the next few days, I understand there are some cinemas showing Birdman a week before a wider release, from what I can make out... and that one looks really interesting. Also, my run down of this year’s best new cinema releases should be on the cards, I think.

Anyway, that’s all that I can think of at the moment... I’m sure there will be some surprises for me too, along the line. So thank you once again for tuning in to this blog when you get a hankering for my words. Have a wonderful Christmas time, whatever you’re doing, and hopefully we’ll all have a better New Year... whether the last one was good or not.
